Veteran WR Keenan McCardell’s Chances of Becoming a Texan

Keenan McCardell

Free agent wide receiver Keenan McCardell visited Texans headquarters 3 weeks ago to talk with club officials and coaches about becoming part of the Texans organization. McCardell was released by the San Diego Chargers this spring. McCardell is in talks with a team other than the Texans though; the Washington Redskins, who drafted McCardell back in 1991. McCardell is definitely in the “twilight” of his career and there was even speculation that he would hang up the cleats after being released by San Diego. It is evident now though that he wants to return for another shot at glory.

Out of the active players in the NFL, McCardell ranks 4th in career receiving yards and has been invited to Hawaii for the Pro-Bowl twice. He has pretty good career numbers; 11,117 yards on 861 receptions for 62 touchdowns. Last season though, was one of the least productive of his career, he caught just 36 passes for 437 yards and 0 touchdowns.

A huge reason Texan fans can be optimistic about signing McCardell is that he lives in Houston. The Texans are holding a roster spot for him if he does choose to sign with the club. It is possible that the reason he is in talks with the Redskins is to get more money from the Texans. For Texan fans hopefully this is the case because McCardell would look great starting on the other side of Andre Johnson. He would also provide some key veteran leadership. So cross your fingers that McCardell will become a Texan.
