Turnovers and Offensive Letdown Lead to Loss in Cleveland 27-17

Cleveland Browns' Jamal Lewis (31) is tackled for a short gain by Houston Texans' Von Hutchins (34) and DeMeco Ryans (59) in the first quarter, in an NFL football game, Sunday, Nov. 25, 2007, in Cleveland.

All season long the Houston Texans have beaten themselves with turnovers. Sunday afternoon at Cleveland Browns Stadium it was that same issue that haunted the team again. The Texans committed a couple of key turnovers and with it came the end of their two-game winning streak in falling to the surging Browns 27-17. One turnover was a Matt Schaub pick in the second quarter, the other a key fumble that came deep in Browns territory with the team down 14-10 in the third.

The Texans had their chances, and led early 7-0 and 10-7, but then Browns QB Derek Anderson came alive, hitting two second quarter TD’s and the Browns defense took over, holding the Texans down to secure their 7th win against four losses. The Texans did not have the firepower on offense they showed last week at home against the Saints. Schaub went 22-for-36 for 256 yards with two TD’s and two picks. Ahman Green sat once again, leaving the bulk of the carries to Ron Dayne, who rushed for 78 yards on 16 carries. Owen Daniels led the team in receiving with 7 catches for 82 yards and a score.

The Browns again showed resolve at home, as they did not play all that well early, and easily could have been in trouble if they didn’t rally for that big second quarter. After a slow start, Anderson went 24-for-35 for 253 yards with 2 scores and a pick. Jamal Lewis ran for 134 yards on 29 carries and a score, and tight end Kellen Winslow pulled in 10 passes for 107 yards and a score.

Cleveland gained its first lead when Winslow pulled in a 7-yard score with just 16 seconds left in the first half. They added on the lead with a Phil Dawson 25-yard field goal in the third quarter, and then in the fourth it was Dawson again with a 27-yard score to make it 20-10 with 8:32 left. Schaub hit Daniels with a six-yard TD with 3:12 to go to make it 27-17.

The Texans (5-6) will travel to Tennessee to take on the Titans in a huge AFC South matchup.
