Texans and YMCA Opening New YMCA in Third Ward

The Houston Texans and the Greater Houston YMCA are partnering together to open up a new and fully ranged YMCA in the Palm Center community in Houston’s Third Ward. The new YMCA will be located on Griggs Rd. and Martin Luther King, Jr., replacing the old, abandoned South Central YMCA between the University of Houston and Texas Southern University on 3500 Wheeler.

The South Central YMCA Board Chairman, Alan Bergeron told KPRC Houston he’s envisioning big things. Bergeron said, “What we’re anticipating is that we’ll be able to serve a lot of people that have been underserved in the past.”

Construction for the new, $10 million YMCA will begin later this year and it is expected to open in 2010. Once opened, the new YMCA will offer its full range of programs, including health and wellness, childcare, recreation and youth development. It will also be the first YMCA facility named after a professional sports team.

Texans’ founder, owner, and chief executive, Bob McNair spoke with the Houston Business Journal on the new partnership. “I have admired the work done by the YMCA since my childhood in North Carolina. We are proud to be able to support an organization that promotes health and family values, and it gives me great pleasure to give back to a group that gave so much to me as a child.”

In related news, the city of Houston’s planned Southeast Metrorail line will be started in the Palmer Center. With that, there will be 16 total stops from the Palmer Center with two stops at the Texans’ Reliant Stadium.
