Former Texan C McKinney Speaks on Injury, Release, And Possible Return?

Former starting C Steve McKinney spoke with Sports Radio 610 AM’s Morning Crew on Thursday about his release and future in football. The native Texan, who played college ball at Texas A&M, told Marc and Andre he might return to the Texans if things can get worked out.

“Well it’s a business decision and I understand that,” said McKinney. “Obviously I’m from here, love playing here and love the team, so I’m going to see if we can get things worked out. Who knows what the future brings? I’m not going to close any doors just yet. That’s for sure.”

Earlier this week, McKinney was released by the Houston Texans after they set up newly acquired C Chris Myers to take the reigns of the Texans’ offensive line. Myers’ $11 million contract was enough for the Texans to second guess owning McKinney’s near $2.4 million contract. He was released on Tuesday.

If his contract was not the reason for his release, then perhaps it was the veteran, original Texan’s knee injury that occurred last season that may jeopardize his career with the Texans.
McKinney told 610, “Well, I still got work to do (to get the knee to 100%). I’m starting rehab over at velocity today so I have to change my rehab a little bit and get going. I’ll get back to 100%. I think by training camp. Every doctor I’ve talked to and trainer I’m working with has told me I’m right on schedule and I’ll be ready to go by training camp.”

McKinney also told 610 that he’d be satisfied with a one-year deal with the Texans if the offer was available. If he leaves Houston, he’d like to play Center or Left Guard for another team, but he knows he can play Right Guard too although he enjoys the Center position the most. As of now, his agent is on vacation, and McKinney knows there will be offers to fill offensive line depth for other teams. But McKinney let it be known that he’s a Texan first.
