Texans Put Forth Game Effort But Fall 30-27 in OT to Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars have always had issues with the Houston Texans, and on Sunday needed a comeback and then even extra time to top their AFC South rivals 30-27 in Jacksonville. Led by two ground gainers normally not heard from in QB David Garrard and seldom used Montell Owens, the Jags were able to survive against a game Texans team that gave them all they could handle.

Garrard raced in a late score that gave the Jags a 27-24 lead with 1:48 to go. Matt Schaub though led the Texans back downfield as he hit some big passes to set up a Kris Brown 47-yard field goal with one second left in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 27. Jacksonville though got more big plays from Garrard in OT to set up Josh Scobee from 37 yards to win the game in OT.

Garrard completed a 24-yard pass to Matt Jones on third down to get to the Houston 41, then found Greg Jones in the flat for 22 more yards. Two plays later Scobee, who beat the Colts last week with a 51-yard FG, nailed the 37 yarder that sends the Jags to 2-2, while dropping the Texans to 0-3.

The loss overshadows the best game this year by far for Schaub, who threw for 307 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to Kevin Walter. Schaub’s 8-yard TD put the Texans ahead 24-20 with 7:06 remaining, but then the defense couldn’t stop the legs of Garrard as he got the Jags down the field for the go-ahead score before the Texans were able to tie it.

Garrard was 23-of-32 for 236 yards. He also ran for 41 yards. Little used fullback Owens raced 41 yards for the score that opened the game up. He ran for more yards in that one play than Fred Taylor (25 yards) and Maurice Jones-Drew (32 yards). Matt Jones caught five passes for 71 yards and a touchdown.

The Texans are home next week for the 1-2 Colts.
