Cushing Talks to the Media After the Draft

NFL Draft Football
(on being picked): “Around 12, 13, 14 you get a little nervous right there but you know the Houston Texans called up with an unfamiliar area code and my agent told me that Houston was going to pick me so I was just thrilled.”

(on playing with Mario Williams): “He’s a pretty good player. There are a lot of good players on that defense so I’m just thrilled to come in there and help that defense as best as possible.”

(on Mark Sanchez): “He’s got all the attributes and all the tools and on top of it he just brings competitive spirit unlike any other player I’ve been around. He’s got that fire in his eye to really win and lead a team.”

(on why Mark Sanchez didn’t attend the draft): I think he just wanted to be with his family. It’s a very extended family out in California. He just wanted to be with his family.”

(on being first USC linebacker off the board): “It feels good, you know I was kind of expecting it and would have been a little disappointed if it didn’t happen but I guess I’ve got those bragging rights for a little bit.”

(on emotions when picked): “It’s like 22 years of relief coming right out of you. You work your entire life for this one moment. This pinnacle of everything that’s built up and you finally hear your name get called and I’m a pro now. This is everything I’ve ever imagined. Any kid out there who’s got any aspirations of playing football just waits for that one day and I was lucky enough to be in the green room and now I’m a Houston Texan.”

(on what he will miss about college): “The team camaraderie, the fight songs, and Coach Carroll and the intensity he brought to the field. It was a very surreal atmosphere that he was able to establish and was able to distinguish fun from hard work and just a snap of a finger and those guys were ready to play.”

(on what he will remember from draft day): “Just everyone that was here today…the people that really helped me out. I was able to bring them all up on stage eventually, too, so it was just an awesome opportunity because it’s not just me who’s going through this today, it’s everyone that was here with me today and they got to share a little bit of the experience.”

(on what he says to doubters): “There’s a lot to say, but I’m not going to. I’m going to continue to prove people wrong with my play like I have done for the past 22 years. There’s going to be many more years to come of this.”

(on multiple draft picks coming out of Jersey): “I’m not sure about how many total, but there were a couple of guys go ahead before me. I think it’s six total. That’s special. Hopefully people will start respecting the state – we put out some pretty good players.”

(on fitting into new system): “As of right now, I know there’s a lot of good players in that system. It’s a very talented defense. I’m not going to be exactly sure to tell you how I’m going to fit into it until I get into the playbook. I’ll be on the phone with the coaches – linebacker coaches, the defensive coordinator – and really just try to fit into that scheme as best as possible.”

(on playing Colts twice each season): “It’s a great opportunity to play against the best quarterback and one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL. That will be a test and we’ll be ready for it.”
