Rex Grossman: Immediate Thoughts

Reports are streaming in that the Texans are meeting with Rex Grossman, with thoughts on signing him to a one year deal Thursday night.  While this is yet to be confirmed (unless we are to believe 100% of what we read on Drew Rosenhaus’ Tweeter account), this would be, in my opinion, a positive move for the Texans.  Why, I hear you asking.  Well, I’m glad you asked that.

Grossman, a former first round pick of the Bears, has been in the league for six seasons.  Granted, he’s been hurt in many of those campaigns, but he is a veteran quarterback.  Surely Grossman can be a caretaker for the Texans if he is forced into action.  Handing to Steve Slaton, throwing to Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels in the warm weather of Houston has surely got to be easier than handing to Matt Forte, throwing to Devin Hester and anyone else on the Bears at Soldier Field.  With an (hopefully) improved defense and a quarterback who is not prone to doing the helicopter, the Texans could win a few games (or more) with Rex behind center.

As much as we hope he will, incumbent Matt Schaub has yet to remain healthy for a full season.  Having a solid, veteran presence below Matt on the depth chart is essential.  Dan Orlovsky, if Rex does not sign, is the current #2 QB in Houston.  Let’s not lose sight of the fact he played (and not all that well) for the hapless (not to mention win less) Lions last season.  This is not to say Dan couldn’t come in and play well.  Again, being in a stronger offense will undoubtedly help Dan play better.  But, he has only been in the NFL since 2005.

Bottom Line: this is strictly a move for veteran depth behind a quarterback who has yet to prove his durability.  For a team with playoff hopes and a coach (possibly) on the hot seat, 2009 is a big season.  Having a veteran backup QB is a strong move.

This is a great move for the Texans. Schaub hasn’t stayed healthy for a full season, so they need a good back-up. Perhaps Kubiak’s not as confident in Dan Orlovsky as he was with Sage. Bringing in Grossman gives the Texans three ‘capable’ quarterbacks.

My only question is ‘why did they sign Orlovsky for so much money?’
