Cushing May Not Be Back Till the Season Opener

It looks like the first time Brian Cushing will be on the field in 2009 will be in the season opener due to his sprained knee suffered a few weeks back:

This is not what the Texans had in mind when they drafted Brian Cushing. They expected the wild-haired linebacker to ride to the rescue for a defense that was missing some of a certain testy temperament he is known for. Not only will he show up without the hair — courtesy of volunteering for some mild training camp hazing — he might not show up until the midnight hour.

Cushing, who suffered a sprained knee three weeks ago, might not play in Friday’s preseason game at Tampa, meaning the first time he steps onto the field in an NFL game could be the Sept. 13 season opener against the Jets. It is better than showing up for that first game after an extended holdout, but it is not good. If Superman were going to rescue you from a fall off a building, would you want him to wait until you’re a few feet from hitting the ground before scooping you up? Of course, that is among the ultimate in something being better late arriving, than not at all.
