Texans Rally But Blow Late Chances in 28-21 Loss to Cardinals

The Texans seemed to come out with jet lag Sunday vs the Arizona Cardinals, but after falling behind 21-0, they took the Cardinals to the limit, only to fall in the end 28-21. Houston rallied all the way back to tie the game at 21, but then a late interception return for a touchdown by Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie earned Arizona the win.

The Texans had tied the game with two fourth quarter touchdowns from Matt Schaub to Andre Johnson, but his intented pass to Kevin Walter was a killer as Rodgers-Cromartie took it back 49 yards for the game-winner.

The Texans were beat up 21-0 at halftime, but rallied with a third quarter score from running back Chris Brown, then the two Schaub to Johnson scores to get the team back in the game. They had the ball at the 5:52 mark of the fourth quarter tied at 21, at their own 11-yard line looking to pull off the comeback in full.

They went from their 11 to their 36 when Schaub looked for Walter, and the Cards corner made the big play to give Arizona the 7-point lead with 2:20 left. The Texans got another great shot through as they got a 63-yard kickoff return by Andre Davis to put the ball at the Cards 40.

Schaub got the team to the Arizona six, and then to the one after a pass to Steve Slaton with a second-and-goal from the one with :59 seconds left. The next play Brown was stopped for no gain, then on third down Schaub’s pass in the end zone was incomplete. On fourth down, Brown was stuffed at the one, ending the game with :40 seconds left.

The win puts the Cards at 2-2, and Kurt Warner went over 300 yards passing going 26-for-38 for 302 yards with two TD’s to Larry Fitzgerald. Schaub threw for 371 yards for the Texans going 35-for-50 with two TD’s and a pick. The team put up 416 yards, but it was the final yard that saved the day for the Cards.

The Texans fall to 2-3 on the season. Houston will be in Cincy next week to play the 4-1 Texans.

  1. Even though the texans did not win, I’m still happy because they took cardinals to the limit. I’m still forever texans fan.
