FS Eugene Wilson to Start

The Houston Chronicle has reported that Texans FS Eugene Wilson is admittedly 100% and the only free safety on the roster for the starting job.  For now, SS Dominque Barber will take the primary backup spot to Wilson, who was injured twice last season, once in the preseason due to a crackblock by Vikings QB Brett Favre and again in November, suffering two broken toes against Tennessee to end his season.  Barber served as the starting FS during Wilson’s time out, but DC Frank Bush said Barber will do fine at both positions.

“He won’t have a lot of missed assignments, so we’re good with Barber,” Bush said. “But for right now, Eugene is our guy.”

For Wilson, 29, he’s the only free safety on the Texans roster.  Thus the Texans are putting a lot in one basket, hoping he can stay health for a full season.  However, expect Wilson to bring his usual championship-winning intensity and discipline to make the Texans feel safe with their safeties in 2010.

“I’m still going to play with the same intensity,” Wilson said. “I still have to practice the same way and work the same way as I would if somebody was breathing down my neck.”

Overall, the Texans backup safeties include: third-year versatile safety Dominique Barber, second-year and hasn’t played a regular season down safety Troy Nolan, possibly versatile rookie defensive back Sherrick McManis, and three college free-agent safeties in Nicholas Polk of Indiana, Torri Williams of Purdue and Aaron Webster of Cincinnati.
