Texans Claim CB Allen, Place SS Barber on IR

When the Miami Dolphins cut the sixteenth overall pick of the 2006 NFL Draft for former Packer cornerback Al Harris yesteday, I immediately hoped the Texans would place a claim on him on the wavier line.  In four years for the Dolphins, cornerback Jason Allen has failed to play at a consistent NFL cornerback’s level.  Earlier this year, he showed glimpses of his potential, but by week 8 the coaches benched him for his degrading play.  And while the Dolphins were quick to cut ties, the Texans were open doors.  As they say, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

For the Houston Texans, Jason Allen will have the opportunity to become a spotlight for the fans and a possible role model for the Texans’ young and inexperienced cornerbacks.  Texans’ cornerback Antwaun Molden returned and was out there last week.  Him and Allen should be charging up the depth chart for extended playing time in the coming weeks, whether Kubiak’s planning it or not.

The Texans made room for Allen by placing strong safety Dominique Barber on the injured reserve list.  Barber injured his knee in practice yesterday.  In additional news, the Texans released center Brett Holms from the practice squad and signed center Cody Wallace to the practice squad.
