Texans Know 1/2 the Safety Won’t Cut It; Part Ways with Pollard

At one time, Bernard Pollard was credited with tightening the defense together.  Last season, Pollard rather became known for his awful pass coverage skills.  He was the leading tackler and most likely also the leader in showing up too late in coverage.  So when the Texans had the chance to tender him last week, they opted not to.  That means Pollard will remain a free agent until a new CBA is agreed upon.  For Pollard and his family, they’re ready:

“As far as my family, we’re ready for it,” said Pollard. “We’re ready for the worst.  I think it could take a long time.  I think it could run over into the season. I just really believe that we, as players, have to stay together. Everybody is assuming what’s going on. Nobody knows. Guys have to save money because you don’t know what’s going to be going on. Do I think the whole season is going to be gone? No. I do think if this thing continues, it will go into the season and there will be a couple of games that will be missed.”

Troy Nolan will be next-in-line to start at strong safety.  And while the Texans also did not retain the services of free safety Eugine Wilson, it is speculated that cornerback Glover Quin may take the starting job.  Quin has excellent jumping skills (if that’s a good thing at all times…) and is a tad slower than the team would want for a cornerback.
