Texans to Move Up to Try to Grab LSU CB Peterson?

The Texans official site talks today about what Peter King wrote about the possible trade up by Houston to grab all-world CB Patrick Peterson. King says he thinks the Texans will move up to get Peterson.

This nugget from SI’s Peter King in his latest Monday Morning Quarterback column sparked a flurry of discussion on Houston sports talk radio this morning:

7. Houston loves Patrick Peterson. Capital L. I smell a trade-up.

Some draft analysts regard Peterson, the Jim Thorpe-award winning cornerback from LSU, as the best overall prospect in the entire draft. Our latest Mock Draft Machine has him going at No. 7 to the San Francisco 49ers. The Texans, of course, pick at No. 11.

It’s no secret that the Texans are looking to upgrade their secondary, but would they trade up to go for a player like Peterson? Let’s look at the team’s history under general manager Rick Smith.

Smith has been in charge of four drafts with the Texans (2007-10), and he has made five draft-day trades. Four of them were to move down. The one that was a trade-up, in 2010, involved picks that had just been acquired in a trade-down.
