Breakdown of the Third Day of the Draft for the Texans breaks down day three for the Texans, and gives their take on some background on the players the team picked.

Round 4, Pick 30 (127) (From Bears through Redskins) Rashad Carmichael DB 5’10” 192 Virginia Tech 5.2

Pick Analysis: The Texans have made it a priority to upgrade their secondary after last year’s dismal performance. Carmicheal is a tough, scrappy corner with skills. He will need some time to develop before competing for a starting spot, but he should be an integral part of their sub-packages.

Round 5, Pick 13 (144) (From Redskins) Shiloh Keo DB 5’11” 219 Idaho 5.0 Video

Pick Analysis: Wade Phillips continues to receive help in the secondary from the draft. Shiloh gives the Texans an instinctive ball hawk with the awareness and feel to be a difference maker in the back end.

Round 5, Pick 21 (152) (From Colts through Redskins) Taylor Yates QB 6’3″ 219 North Carolina 2.8

Pick Analysis: The Texans pick up a highly competitive quarterback in Yates. He improved tremendously over his final season and could develop into a solid backup quarterback for Houston in time.

Round 7, Pick 11 (214) Derek Newton OL 6’5″ 311 Arkansas State 2.7 Video

Pick Analysis: Newton gives the Texans some depth along their line. He’s a big guy who could fill in as a right tackle or guard.

Round 7, Pick 51 (254) (Compensatory Selection) Cheta Ozougwu DL 6’2″ 247 Rice 3.1 Video

Pick Analysis: Ozougwu is inconsistent and doesn’t completely understand football, be he has quickness and edge-rush ability. We’ll see if Mr. Irrelevant makes a solid career in the NFL.
