Texans Running Back Arian Foster Discusses How Therapy Changed His Life

Among all the hero worship and fanatical support, it easy to forget that professional athletes are people too. They are just as likely to encounter personal problems as any other human being on the planet. In some ways, dealing with these personal problems are more difficult for the athlete who is often faced with legitimate concerns about exposing their weaknesses in a cynical world where far too many people want to see them fall.

In a recent interview, Houston Texans running back Arian Foster sat down to discuss his past problems with alcohol abuse and how intense counseling restored him back to a better way of living, which may have saved both his NFL career and his life.

Before he was willing to seek help for an escalating alcohol problem, he counted himself among the individuals who were reluctant to admit to their illness for fear they would suffer the consequences of being seen as weak. The stigma of any type of mental illness for a professional athlete, once exposed, tends to get played out in a variety of ways in the media. For Foster, he chose the bottle instead of looking to face his problems.

As Foster describes it, everything changed when he finally decided to seek help. “It just got to a point where I just threw my hands in the air and I was like: ‘This is going to kill me,'” adding “So I went and got help and it was the best decision I ever made.”

As is the case with most people who find themselves dealing with an addiction, it took a life-changing event to convince Foster that the time had come to make some major changes in his life. That decision was prompted when he found himself dealing with his impending divorce from Romina, the wife he loved very much. In a moment of clarity, he explains “This is extremely personal, but I was just not the best husband. I just wasn’t. And that was because I didn’t know how to be a husband. … I was out there just trying to wing it.”

The loss forced him into counseling, a step he is now eternally grateful he took. Through working with his counselor, he has been able to put his destructive behavior in check and now finds himself gaining strength as he continues to develop the emotional skills to deal with life’s issues without the need to self-medicate.

Foster’s new found resolve couldn’t have come at a better time. With a history of injuries on the field twice so far this this season, he has suffered a serious injury, including a season ending Achilles tear that might end up costing him the rest of his career. While certainly disappointed, he seems to be taking it all in stride due to his recent growth as a man who is coming to terms with his demons.

In an effort to pay forward his good fortune of getting his life back from addiction, Foster has joined forces with the Jets’ Brandon Marshall’s PROJECT 375 organization. This non-profit group’s charter is to help fellow athletes learn to embrace their mental disorders and frailties. By helping to remove the stigma of having to deal with these types of personal issues, the hope is more of these athletes will seek the help they need.
