Texans WR Hopkins Holding Out; Wants a New Deal from the Club

DeAndre Hopkins

Texans star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins is holding out of training camp as he seeks a new contract, sources told Adam Schefter and Tania Ganguli of ESPN.

Hopkins, who is entering the fourth and final year of his rookie contract, did not report for the start of the Texans’ camp, according to sources. He will be subject to fines of $40,000 for each day of camp he misses.

Because the Texans picked up the fifth-year option available on all first-round pick contracts, Hopkins technically has two seasons left on his deal.

Hopkins was a first-round pick in 2013, and the Texans extended their 2011 and 2012 first-round picks [J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus] as they entered their fourth seasons.

A week ago, Hopkins expressed hope that his contract situation would resolve itself this offseason.

“I’m not looking for a certain range,” Hopkins said, during a break at a Hyundai football camp for local children. “I just want to be treated for what I’m worth. That’s fair to say, right?”

Hopkins is a very good player, the best player in terms of receivers on the Texans roster right now, but this is not the right way to go about business. More so with a new QB in Houston, this is for sure not a good sign that he’s going to be sitting away from the team as the club tries to build on what they did last season.

Here’s a bet on Bet365 website that Hopkins and the Texans slowly start to chat, and eventually a deal gets done. Let’s face it, the two sides need each other. There’s no way that Hopkins will sit out the season, and the Texans want him long term, and they will have to ante up as he’s a great player who can be the next Andre Johnson if not better on the Texans roster.
