Gary Kubiak: “We as a staff all need to lean on Wade”

Houston Texans Gary Kubiak emphasized yesterday that they will be utilizing Wade Phillips’ career experience in moving forward with personnel decisions.  Whether its the draft, defensive coaching staff or the players in free agency, Gary Kubiak made it clear that he’d be leaning on Phillips:

“I’ll be leaning real hard.  He’s been to a lot more rodeos than me.  He’s been doing this a long time; he’s been very successful.  We as a staff need to all lean on Wade.”

Already, Phillips has told the press he expects to be a part of the Texans’ draft plans.  His 3-4 defense is his own style and it has brought proven success wherever its installed.  For the Texans, that means that natural outside linebacker Brian Cushing could move inwards, or he could move to the weak side to continue to blitz at the line in Phillip’s defensive 3-4 scheme.  While Darryl Sharpton could take the middle beside Pro Bowl MLB DeMeco Ryans (achilles), Gary Kubiak said on Cushing’s position availability:

“A lot of discussions about that.  (Defensive coordinator) Wade (Phillips) sees a lot of different things, him doing a lot of different things, but nothing’s locked in at this point.”

When Phillips was asked by Houston Chronicle reporter John McClain about the future of the defensive tackle position, Phillips recognized Shaun Cody and Earl Mitchell as talents for the system.  He also later pointed out Amobi Okoye puts the Texans in a great position to run a 3-4, adding to the huge depth at defensive line; something he said the Texans had for his 3-4, not a 4-3.  When questioned about Texans media superstar defensive end, Mario Williams, Phillips responded:

“Well we have a few players that have been in the Pro Bowl and those guys certainly have outstanding talent and that’s what Mario has. You want to utilize your best players. If you put the pressure on them to play well and you put them in positions that they can utilize their ability and that’s what we plan to do.”

When Phillips was asked about free agent Nnamdi Asomugha, he quickly deflected the question obviously unknowing of Asomugha’s voiding of his contract extension option.  Phillips said:

“We’re really not allowed by the League and I will not talk about players under contract with another team. I have some money in my pocket, but I want to keep it.”

In all, Phillips emphasized that he needed to do much more player evaluation but he looks forward to the opportunity and challenges ahead. The Texans players are sure tired of losing, and their eagerness to play and stay in a game is obviously failing.  Phillips isn’t only needed by the coaching staff and ownership, but the players need his winning and defensively minded direction to join the 2010 #3 offense at the hip.
