Texans Defense Dominates Titans in 20-6 Win

Tennessee Titans v Houston Texans

Texans defensive ends J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus must have woken up hungry on Sunday, because they sure did have a feast against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

The two defensive studs dominated the Titans, combining for six of Houston’s seven sacks and 13 of the 14 hits on Titans QB Zach Mettenberger in the Texans 20-6 win.

The Titans got a quick field goal on their opening drive to make it 3-0, but then the Texans defense got serious, laying a beating down on Mettenberger and the Tennessee offensive line that they could do nothing about.

”We had to get the win,” coach Bill O’Brien said. ”It wasn’t pretty. But who cares? It’s a win.”

The win was critical for the Texans, who a week ago found themselves down 41-0 at halftime to the Miami Dolphins. They were disgraced, and Sunday they took it out on their AFC South rival.

Brian Hoyer threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns to help the Texans offense score more than enough. The first TD went to DeAndre Hopkins from 21 yards out, and the second to former Titans WR Nate Washington from 42 yards out to make it 17-6 late in the third quarter.

Alfred Blue started in place of the injured Arian Foster and had 40 yards rushing and 33 yards receiving.

The offensive line for the Titans was no match for the Texans, as on the day Mettenberger was hit 14 times, and sacked 7 times.

“We played like (expletive) today,” Titans left tackle Taylor Lewan said of the offensive line. “We’re upset about it. We need to do better. I need to do better.”

Lewan, who has been fighting injuries, allowed at least two of the sacks, and rookie tackle Jeremiah Poutasi was also beaten several times.

“It was obvious he was struggling out there today,” Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt said of Poutasi. “We tried to get him through it, but it was just tough.”

Watt, who tied a career high with 20 1/2 sacks last season, has more sacks through eight games this season (8 1/2) than he did through eight games last year (7).

”That’s the type of defense we expect to be,” Watt said.

The Texans are on the bye next week, and then travel to Cincinnati to play the undefeated Bengals on November 15th.
